Project 1: Sign Set Final

The final set was chosen for:

  1. Its clarity in interpretation
  2. Unified weight line
  3. Its easy to be applied on to material for actual production
  4. Simple design that can be adhered to most of the buildings on campus

The overall outcome of the sign set is clean and straightforward without the need for heavy interpretation.

REMO

The project has taught me the amount of time and work required for a seemingly easy signs. Size matters- it needs to be able to be small and large and keep its efficiency. Unity- let people know that THIS sign belongs to MSU and belongs with the other signs.

Project 1: Sign Set Final

Here is my final set and designs–prior to scanning them onto the computer. I had to white out some spots where mistakes were made. However, once the images are converted to strictly black and white on a scanner, the flaws will disappear.

  1. Shuttle Bus Stop
  2. The Global Education Center
  3. The Center for Writing Excellence
  4. The University Library
  5. An Advisement Office

I did the building structure on the computer and the rest is done by hand. I like the overall results. I made the tires on the bus to ground it, globe stand to ground it, stronger feather and ink design that has more detail, the books are thicker, and the lines of the light bulb thicker. The arches are higher and the white space in-between the arch and the sign variation is thicker–these are to have a better balance of black and white in the design.

Project 1: Sign Set Rough and Tweaks

I have decided that my strongest design is the arch structure:

  1. Shuttle Bus Stop
  2. The Global Education Center
  3. The Center for Writing Excellence
  4. The University Library
  5. An Advisement Office

The areas that need to be altered are:

  1. Higher inner arches–balance of black and white
  2. “Ground” each sign–have a consistent theme beyond the arch
    1. Tires on the bus
    2. Put the world on a stand/globe
  3. Thicker white lines for the lightbulb–balance and to ensure the image is noticeable from afar

The rough sketches of the changes are much stronger. Each design can use work or fine tuning to take it from basic to a simple but effective image

Project 1: Sign Sets Rough/Critique

I went and kept the lamp and stamp system for the following:

  1. Shuttle Bus Stop
  2. The Global Education Center
  3. The Center for Writing Excellence
  4. The University Library
  5. An Advisement Office

I was walking around campus and was inspired by a structure on the top of College Hall and created by last set according to this.

The final three sets that are pictured above:

  1. Stamps- each design will have a stamp to unify it
    1. issues- the designs are not unified beyond the “stamp”, the line weights are not similar nor are the shapes
    2. to move forward I would have to at least redesign all the images and make a similar light weight or black/white ratio.
  2. Lamppost- each design will have the image in the area that the “banner” of the typical sign would be in
    1. issues- lamppost is too distracting and beyond the post there is little similarities
    2. to move forward I would have to make the light post smaller and the designs to have approximately the same black/white ratio
  3. Arch structure- each design will be inside of the arches and are mostly black
